I just watched my teammates, Jessie Diggins and Kikkan Randall, win the Team Sprint World Championship! They were dominant in their victory and looked under control the entire race. Before today, the U.S. had underachieved in these championships, but today’s gold medal far outshines any previous disappointments. I am proud and inspired to be their teammate.
Winning a gold medal is truly a team effort. Our wax staff has worked hard all week and all season. I’m sure at times it has felt like a thankless job. The waxing this week has been tough. For the sprint on Thursday in particular, our staff had trouble making fast skis with good kick. However, they nailed it today! Jessie and Kikkan appeared to have some of the fastest in the race. Also, our coaching staff has ridden the ups and downs of ski racing with us (athletes) this season. When we don’t ski well they take it very personally and feel like they failed us. They are a huge part of today’s success.
The National Nordic Foundation (NNF) has also played a huge and invaluable role in today’s success. We couldn’t be here without the funding of the NNF, and we, as a team, couldn’t be achieving success without the development pipeline, supported by NNF, that all of us have come through to get to the National Team.
Today was a great day for U.S. Nordic Skiing and it truly was an effort and achievement of the entire U.S. Nordic Skiing community.
The NNF's mission is to support athletic excellence in developing nordic athletes in the United States.
“NNF has continued to impact our sport in momentous ways….You’ve mobilized the entire ski community towards a common challenge and we are just starting to see the results.”- Ida Sargent
