“I was extremely fortunate to be selected for this year’s cohort of the Trail to Gold grant. I attended the Tour de Ski in Toblach and Val di Fiemme, Italy. It was an incredible experience to be a part of the the US contingent to the Tour this year, so much so that it is hard to pick a favorite moment. Some highlights included getting to watch the first 5k heat mass start races trailside (and getting to see Jessie and Gus’ twin victories), going for a ski down the Marcialonga trail, and all of the final climb day (including getting glittered by the glitter queen herself). I learned so much from getting to observe all of the athletes, coaches, and staff members on the trip. This included the way the wax techs operate both as a team and as individuals, how the athletes managed the demands of the tour, and how the coaches strategized for each of the Tour’s stages to best prepare the athletes. Since coming back I’ve really enjoyed getting to adapt what I learned into my own coaching!”
