In a very close race where the top 3 finishers were within two seconds, Samantha Smith was edged out of fourth in a photo finish to end the day in fifth in the U20 Women’s Sprint.
Smith and Kate Oldham both qualified for the heats with Smith advancing through the quarterfinals and semifinals in the Lucky Loser position. Oldham finished third in her quarterfinal heat and did not advance.
Smith led the US team in qualifications finishing 8th. She was followed by Kate Oldham in 14th, Sydney Palmer-Ledger in 35th and Nina Seeman in 50th.
The race was won Maria Hartz Melling of Norway, with Maerta Rosenberg of Sweden in second and Elizaveta Bekisheva of Russia in third.
